Azure Migrate Adds Support for Ultra SSD: High-Performance Migration Just Got Better

Another solid improvement is now in public preview — and it’s one that’ll make a real difference for anyone migrating I/O-intensive workloads to Azure: Azure Migrate now supports Ultra SSD as a destination disk type.

For those managing high-performance applications — think SAP HANASQL ServerOracle, or any workload with aggressive latency and throughput requirements — this update gives you the flexibility to bring that performance profile into Azure during migration, right from the start.

What’s New?

With this enhancement, Azure Migrate now lets you:

  • Select Ultra SSD (Ultra Disk) as a target for migrating data disks
  • Seamlessly move workloads from on-prem to Azure without post-migration disk type changes
  • Tap into Ultra Disk capabilities like:
    • Up to 400,000 IOPS
    • 10,000 MBps throughput
    • Sub-millisecond latency
    • Dynamic performance scaling

In other words, it allows you to land your critical workloads on the best-performing managed disks Azure offers, right during the migration phase — no need for additional steps or manual tuning afterward.

When to Use This

This is especially useful in scenarios such as:

  • Migrating large-scale OLTP systems or analytics platforms
  • Ensuring enterprise-grade performance from day one post-migration
  • Avoiding downtime or performance penalties due to temporary disk types

Previously, you might’ve had to migrate first and then upgrade your disks after validation. Now, the process is more seamless and production-ready.


If you’re planning or running large migrations — particularly for Tier 1 apps — I highly recommend reviewing this new capability. It’s a small checkbox during setup, but it could mean a big win in terms of post-migration performance and simplicity.
