Hello Guys
When your production workloads are hosted on Azure VMs using Premium SSD v2 disks, you might be wondering how to back up your data and ensure business continuity in case of disasters or ransomware attacks. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through enabling Azure Backup for your Azure VMs using Premium SSD v2 disks, and we’ll explore the benefits and limitations of this solution.
What is Premium SSD v2?
Premium SSD v2 is the next generation of Azure Premium SSD Disk Storage, which provides the most advanced block storage solution for IO-intensive enterprise workloads that require sub-millisecond disk latencies and high IOPS and throughput at a low cost. With Premium SSD v2, you can provision up to 64TiBs of storage capacity, 80,000 IOPS, and 1,200 MBPS throughput on a single disk. You can also customize disk performance to precisely meet your workload requirements or seasonal demands, without the need to provision additional storage capacity.
How to enable Azure Backup on Premium SSD v2 disks?
Azure Backup is a built-in service that provides simple, secure, and cost-effective solutions to back up your data and recover it from the Microsoft Azure cloud. Azure Backup supports Azure VMs using Premium SSD v2 disks in public preview in the East US and West Europe Azure regions. To enable backup on your Azure VMs using Premium SSD v2 disks, you need to request access to the preview and follow the steps in the documentation.
What are the benefits and limitations of Azure Backup on Premium SSD v2 disks?
Some of the benefits of using Azure Backup on Premium SSD v2 disks are:
- You can protect your data from accidental deletion, corruption, or ransomware attacks by creating point-in-time backups that are stored in a separate recovery vault.
- You can restore your data to the same or different Azure VMs using Premium SSD v2 disks in minutes, without any data loss or downtime.
- You can leverage features such as incremental backups, encryption, retention policies, backup alerts, and backup reports to optimize your backup management and costs.
Some of the limitations of using Azure Backup on Premium SSD v2 disks are:
- Currently, this solution is only available in select regions and only supports data disks. OS disks are not supported yet.
- Currently, this solution does not support shared disks (Shared premium SSDs) or ultra-disks.
- Currently, this solution does not support disk resizing or performance scaling after enabling backup. You need to disable backup before changing the disk size or performance.
