How to estimate costs for replicating your environment with ASR in a Disaster and Recovery solution in MS Azure.

Hey guys!!

Do you know how to estimate the costs required to use Azure Site Recovery (ASR)??? No??? Let’s go…

I will demonstrate below an easy and easy-to-understand way.

As everyone knows, one of the disaster and recovery solutions present in Microsoft Azure is ASR. Through it, it is possible to replicate your Virtual Machines (VMs) from OnPremisses environments (Physical, VMware, Hyper-v), between MS Azure data centers, as well as orchestration of VMware and Hyper-v clusters.

In summary, Azure ASR will have the following costs: OnPremisses environments for Microsoft Azure (Hyper-v/Vmware/Physical to MS Azure)

  • ASR license per VM
  • Storage used for your replicated VMs

*Cost of inbound bandwidth to Microsoft Azure is not charged (OnPremisses to Microsoft Azure) *First 30 days, ASR license per VM is free *During replication, your VMs are turned off, with no processing and memory costs Microsoft Azure environments for Microsoft Azure (Example: Brazil to USA)

  • ASR license per VM
  • Cost of outbound bandwidth for replication (ASR compresses up to 60% of data)
  • Storage used for your replicated VMs

*During replication, your VMs are turned off, with no processing and memory costs
*First 30 days, ASR license per VM is free Orchestration environments (Example: VMware / Hyper-v)

  • ASR license per VM

*First 30 days, ASR license per VM is free

Below is an example of how to estimate the cost in the calculator, for a scenario where we will replicate 4 VMs from the southern region of Brazil in Microsoft Azure to the east of the United States. Where 2 VMs have 2 standard disks each and 2 VMs have 2 SSD disks each, totaling 4 standard disks and 4 SSD disks. Each standard disk has a forecast of 20GB of change per day and each SSD disk has 30GB of change. It is important to remember that this change rate goes hand in hand with the daily snapshots configured in replication retentions.

ASR through its compression can compress up to 60% of the data in outbound traffic transfer, leaving approximately the remaining 40% to be charged.
