Live Resize for Azure Premium SSD v2 and Ultra Disks: Flexibility Without Downtime

Hello Azure Community,

There’s a new capability in public preview that I believe many of you will find both practical and cost-efficient: Live Resize for Premium SSD v2 and Ultra NVMe Disks.

If you’ve ever had to scale storage mid-deployment — or worse, plan for peak storage needs months in advance “just in case” — this is a feature that changes the game. You can now dynamically expand disk capacity with zero downtimefor your applications.

Why This Matters

For most production workloads, storage planning is a balancing act between cost and scalability. With this update, Azure allows you to:

  • Start with smaller disks to save on initial costs
  • Resize them live, as your capacity requirements grow
  • Avoid service disruptions or application downtime
  • Eliminate the need for VM reboots or storage migrations

This applies to Premium SSD v2 (Pv2) and Ultra NVMe Disks, which are typically used for high-performance scenarios — think databases, analytics, or high-throughput services where every second of downtime has a cost.

When to Use It

I see this being especially useful for:

  • Workloads with unpredictable growth (e.g. data ingestion, e-commerce, seasonal demand)
  • Dev/test environments that transition to production
  • Any situation where you want to pay-as-you-grow without operational headaches

And let’s be honest — who enjoys scheduling downtime for something as simple as a storage expansion?

If you’re managing performance-critical workloads or just want more control over your storage lifecycle, this new Live Resize feature is worth exploring. It’s the kind of enhancement that feels small but removes a big architectural constraint.

Have you tested it yet? Let me know your thoughts — curious to hear if it worked seamlessly for your scenarios.

Take care,
Eduardo
