Enhancing Flexibility with Azure Backup’s Cross-Subscription Restore

Hello Azure Community,

Azure Backup has introduced the Cross-Subscription Restore (CSR) feature, empowering users to restore Azure Virtual Machines (VMs) and their associated data across different subscriptions within the same tenant. This advancement offers greater flexibility in managing backup and disaster recovery strategies.

Key Features of Cross-Subscription Restore

  • Flexible Restoration – Users can now restore Azure VMs from a recovery point in one subscription to another within the same tenant, adhering to Azure role-based access control (RBAC) rules.
  • Comprehensive Support – CSR supports various restoration scenarios, including:
    • Restoring entire VMs to a different subscription.
    • Restoring VM disks independently to another subscription.
    • Restoring SQL databases hosted on Azure VMs across subscriptions.

Considerations and Limitations

  • Unsupported Scenarios – CSR does not support:
    • Restoration from snapshots.
    • Restoration from secondary region backups.
    • Encrypted Azure VMs.
    • Trusted Launch VMs.
  • Permissions – Appropriate Azure RBAC permissions are required in both the source and target subscriptions to perform CSR operations.

Benefits of Cross-Subscription Restore

  • Enhanced Disaster Recovery – CSR facilitates robust disaster recovery plans by allowing restorations across different subscriptions, providing an added layer of resilience.
  • Simplified Management – Organizations managing multiple subscriptions can now streamline their backup and restoration processes, reducing complexity and administrative overhead.

By leveraging Cross-Subscription Restore, Azure users can achieve more versatile and efficient backup strategies, ensuring critical workloads are protected and recoverable across various subscription boundaries.

Azure continues to evolve with more innovations in backup and recovery—stay ahead with the latest advancements! 🚀
